When the winter weather starts to hit, it’s important for pet owners to keep their animals on leashes, as many dogs end up stuck in the ice or even underwater. If such an animal isn’t rescued in time, it could spell tragedy for the pet and its family.
Wild animals can also get stuck on the ice, and when they do, there aren’t always humans around to save them. A deer fell in the Farmington River, but was lucky to have compassionate humans around to save her.
The deer was chased onto the icy river by coyotes, but couldn’t get herself out of the sticky situation for several hours.
She made slow progress, foot by foot, trying to get to shore. But, exhausted and undoubtedly frightened, it looked like she needed help.
Animal control and rescuers showed up after receiving calls from concerned passersby and devised a plan.
One harnessed rescuer made her way onto the ice with a blanket in hand and threw it over the deer to calm her down before grabbing her from behind to drag her ashore.
Only a few hours after the deer was brought onto solid ground, she was able to get up and walk away. Rescuers are still monitoring her, though she doesn’t appear to be injured and is expected to survive.
