When Tom Maddock’s wife Amanda gave birth to their first daughter, Alice, the father knew he wanted to do something a little unusual. Tom decided to make a blended drink out of Amanda’s placenta.
Afterward, though, Tom became sick. The couple joked that they should have another baby so that they could make a proper meal out of the placenta.
“When Tom blended my first placenta, me and my friend Cat had a try,” Amanda told Daily Mail. “It was sort of, ‘I will if you will.’ It tasted very metallic and she said if I have another child, we’d go the whole hog and have a sit down meal, half-joking really.”
After Amanda had her second daughter, Tom chopped the placenta into pieces and fried it in garlic and red onions. He made a sauce from scratch using tomato puree, peppers, red onions, and mushrooms.
To accompany the pizza, he made a daiquiri mix with the placenta, pepper, and sugar.
“I knew straight away that I wasn’t going to waste it — I wanted to do something with it, I just wasn’t sure what. The first time I just blended it and drank it and it was pretty grim to be honest; you could just taste the blood and it was gristly and fatty,” Tom said. “The second time round I thought, right, let’s do it properly, so I started looking on the internet for ideas.”
The couple only managed to eat a third of the placenta. They insisted that it tasted like liver and that it was quite tasty with the garlic. Tom said he would eat it again.
“I’d definitely do it again, and anybody that eats meat should definitely give it a try,” he said. “Some friends thought I was a weirdo for eating it, but it’s no different to eating something like black pudding. At least you know where it’s come from, and you don’t get more organic than your wife’s placenta.”
